Divorcing the Muffin Top

My journey in becoming healthier, happier, and fitting into smaller pants.

Herbal Teas

In looking at where I can drop calories, one major change that I have made is vastly reducing the number of calories I consume in my beverages. I have made major changes from drinking soda/pop, juice, and coffee with milk and sugar, to drinking black tea with milk, to now discovering herbal teas (and a heck of a lot of water).

I love herbal teas. I never thought I would. They come in an assortment of flavours such as orange, camomile, strawberry, black current, peppermint, chai, lemon, peach, and the list goes on. They’re delicious!! I’m finding that the tea can often calm a craving that I am having – if my meal plan does not include any more fruit, but I’m really craving something sweet, I’ll have an orange herbal tea, and voila! Craving is subsided.

Not only does herbal tea come with a variety of benefits, it is virtually calorie free (if you don’t add any milk or sugar). I have been drinking herbal tea like crazy.

Some of the benefits of herbal tea that I have noticed personally are:

  • Assisting with digestion/Reduction of bloating
  • Assisting with sleep (camomile)
  • Increased hydration

All of these factors were really important to me in ensuring I improve them (bloating, unrestful sleep, dehydration), so making this change to my diet has been a really huge positive.

Each type of tea has different benefits. I’ve read that herbal tea can help boost immune system, increase metabolism, reduce the risk of stroke & cancer (things that I won’t necessarily experience day to day).  Have a look at these sources to learn more about herbal tea:

In conclusion, be careful how many calories you are DRINKING. Look for good ways to keep drinking more and more water – if you need a flavour boost, try some herbal tea! It’s great for you, doesn’t contain calories, and will assist your overall health in the long run.

Happy Tea-sday!
